segunda parte: the city

Después de un increíble road trip por la carretera de LA hasta SFO (que es la primera parte de la guía) por fin llegamos a Frisco (así le decía Kerouac)  así me gusta decirle.  Así que espero les sea útil esta  pequeña guía de este bellísimo lugar.

After driving from LA to SFO on a road trip (that is the first part of the travel guide) we made it to Frisco (that’s the way Kerouac used to called it ) that’s the way i like to call it also so i hope you enjoy this little but helpful guide.

San Francisco Pier. El mas famoso es el 39 por su show de leones marinos, botes y restaurantes.  Un must:  probar el cangrejo ya sea en un restaurante o en los carritos callejeros, la especialidad de la bahía.

39 is the most popular thanks to the Sea Lions shows, boats and restaurants.  A must: try the crab in all the presentations, in a restaurant or in the streets.

Renta de Bicicletas por el Golden Gate. De las cosas mas bonitas que he hecho en un viaje.  De esas experiencias que hay que intentar por lo menos una vez.

Grafitti Callejero y galerías. La que tiene mas historia: Upper Playground

A través de 10 años, la compañía Californiana Upper Playground nos ha deleitado con diseños de importantes artistas, desde Sam Flores hasta Estevan Oriol, pasando por David Choe, Jeremy Fish, Fase 2, Ricky Power, David Ellis, Dalek y muchos más.   San Francisco Store 220 Fillmore Street.

Street Graffiti.  Most Known: Upper Playground.  For 10 years this Californian company had shown us great designs from different artists like Sam Flores, Estevan Oriol and David Choe.

Haight-Ashbury es un barrio de la ciudad de San Francisco, llamado así por la intersección de la calle Haight y Ashbury.  Este distrito se hizo famoso por ser la zona principal del movimiento hippie de finales de la década de los  60’s y esta lleno de tiendas chic, cafes y Virgin Records.

The most famous district known for being the principal zone for the hippie movement around SFO in the 60’s.

Chinatown. Es el barrio chino más antiguo en América del Norte.  Hay dos vías principales. Una de ellas es la avenida Grant (都板街), con la Puerta del Dragón La otra, la calle Stockton (市德頓街), es menos frecuentada por los turistas, y presenta un auténtico aspecto chino, recordando a Hong Kong, con sus productos y mercados de pescado, tiendas y restaurantes.

It’s the oldest district of North America. There are 2 ways. One is Grant Ave with the Dragon Door and the other is Stockton ST which reminds us Hong Kong thanks to the market, stores and restaurants.

City Lights Bookstore: Para los amantes  y manneaticos como yo de la Beat Generation.

La Beat Generation  llego a SFO en los 50’s con Kerouac, Ginsberg y Neal Cassady y dos de los hangouts mas famosos de estos personajes son el Vesuvio Cafe and City Lights Bookstore. Fav: Book of Haikus, Mexico City Blues, Dharma Bums de Jack Kerouac

For Beat Generation manneatics like myself.  This Movement arrived at SFO  in the 50’s with Kerouac, Cassady and Ginsberg and two of the most popular hangouts for this guys were the Vesuvio Café and the City Lights Bookstore.

Jack Kerouac alley. Es una callecita en Chinatown que conecta a Grant Ave y Columbus Ave.  Al callejón se le nombro Jack Kerouac que pasaba muchas tardes alrededor de este lugar.

 

It’s an alleyway in Chinatown that connects Grant Ave and Columbus Ave. This alley was named that way thanks to the writer that used to spend the afternoons near those streets.

Museos: Arte Moderno  (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).

Tuve la suerte de ver la exposición de fotos de Richard Avedon que se las recomiendo aparte de toparme con famosos como Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips) y su esposa que al día siguiente se presentaría en el Festival de Treasure Island.

I was lucky to see Richard Avedons’ exhibition which I recommend. Also I saw famous people like Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips) and his wife that was going to close the Treasure Island Fest a day after.

Es el único museo en el oeste de los EUA dedicado a la preservación y exhibición de la caricatura en todas sus expresiones contando con 6,000 piezas originales es su colección permanente.

Is the only museum on the western part of USA dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of the cartoon in all kinds of ways. This museum has 6,000 original pieces in it’s permanent collection.

We went to all kinds of bars and clubs; from youngsters and beers to gay and lesbian and warehouses with great music concerts.

Treasure Island Festival, San Francisco

Aunque no se compara con el San Francisco Outside Lands Festival, el encanto que tiene este festival es que es muy pequeño, dura 2 días, cuenta con 2 escenarios y esta en una isla artificial con la maravillosa vista de la bahía de San Francisco.  Treasure Island Festival  en su tercera edición (17 y 18 octubre) tuvo un line up de 25 plus bands como MGMT, Passion Pit, MSTRKRFT, Girl Talk, The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, Beirut y Flaming Lips; este ultimo siendo la razón principal ya que cerraron el festival con la presentación de su ultimo disco Embryonic, el cual muchos fans opinan que no es tan bueno porque se desprende de lo que estamos acostumbrados a escuchar de ellos, por lo mismo,  recomiendo que lo escuchen mas de una vez para que se empapen de esta nueva fase de los Flaming, algo mas experimental pero sin perder su identidad.

Although it doesn’t compares to the San Francisco Outside Lands Festival, this one’s smaller, last 2 days, has 2 stages and it’s located over an artificial island with the great view of San Frans Bay.  Treasure Island in it’s 3rd edition had a plus line line up with 25 bands and The Flaming Lips as headliners introducing Embryonic, which a lot of fans dislike but I have to say it’s a very experimental Flaming sound like kind of songs that I really enjoyed.

No tuve la suerte de ir el sábado porque fue sold out con MGMT y Passion Pit, así que ese día fui a uno de los Festival Night Shows donde la banda principal fue A Place to Bury Strangers, que sonaron muy bien y contó además con la participación de 3 bandas abridoras  These are Powers, All the Saints y Geographer, les recomiendo esta ultima, es una chava con look Karen O que hace maravillas con su voz, su banda y su teclado.

I didn’t got the chance to go on Saturday because it was a sold out but went to the Festival Night Shows instead with A Night To Bury Strangers as  headliner and some new bands which I really recommend: All The Saints and Geographers, this last one with an awesome Karen O look a like girl.

Después de mi ticket de $65  y del camión que nos traslado a la isla, el frío era insoportable, pero se compenso con la  presentación de Beirut, que se sintió como una moderna experiencia gipsy mariachi en conjunto con la gran voz de Zach Condon. Yo La Tengo también se rifo  y en The Walkmen me fui a formar casi 40 minutos por un café, ni el alcohol tenia tantos fans ese día.  Después de mi tercer café The Decemberists nos hizo entrar en calor con unos visuales increíbles como en una onda Los Angeles, I’m Yours con canciones de su ultimo disco Hazards of Love.

After buying my $65 ticket, the cold on the island was unbearing but it was compensated with the gig from Beirut, Yo La tengo was great also and The Decembrists made us warm enough with their great visuals.

Ya estábamos listos para ver que sorpresas nos traía la imaginación de Wayne Coyne que  desde el soundcheck nos llamo a todos  para que nos reuniéramos en el escenario a verlo… de pronto en la pantalla una mujer con sexys movimientos  de cadera empieza a bailar y bailar y bailar hasta dilatarse y de su vagina  digital sale una luz por donde descienden  Michael Ivins,  Steven Drozd y Kliph Scurlock, siendo Coyne el ultimo y metiéndose en su memorable bola de plástico con la cual se aventó al publico.  Me gusto mucho el concierto, era una fiesta psicodélica, con visuales muy llamativos, explosiones de serpentinas,  muñecos  de nieve bailando en el escenario con todo y las famosas intervenciones de Coyne.

We were ready for The Flaming Lips so we went to the sound check when Wayne Coyne call us… a woman in the screen dancing so sexy till her digital vagina drops totally open with a light where  Michael Ivins,  Steven Drozd and Kliph Scurlock descended with Coyne jumping into the crowd in his giant plastic balloon.  It was a great psicodelic party full of visuals, explosions and snow men dancing. A great closure for this festival. If you can go next year, dont miss this small but great experience.

Sin duda un gran cierre para el Treasure Island Festival.  Si tienen oportunidad de ir el año que entra, no se pierdan este pequeño gran festival.
