VICE Guide Travel to Chicago

Gracias a Vice y Wiborowa que llevaron a un grupo de comunicadores a una casa estilo Big Brother en Chicago con el fin de cubrir Lollapalooza, logre colarme y aunque soy manneatica de los festivales; esta vez me toco conocer mas de la ciudad, aun así alcance a ver un poco del festival.

Durante 2 días estuvimos grabando The Vice Guide Travel to Chicago que estará en http://www.vbs.tv/ en septiembre y es una guía de los lugares que debes visitar si estas en esta bellisima ciudad. Acá les va un adelanto.

Thanks to Vice and Wiborowa for making  the trip  to Chicago real for me and  for some media friends  and  for letting us stay  in a Big Brother kinda house, and although im a big music festival manneatic, this time i got to know more about this beautiful city.  For 2 days we were shooting  The Vice Guide Travel to Chicago that will be on the net in september on vbs.tv

HOT DOUG’S

Definitivamente el mejor lugar de todo Chicago para ir a comer un hot dog,  el chiste es que son  gourmet. Eso si ve con mucha hambre y llévate tu silla y paraguas porque gracias a que Anthony Bourdain de No Reservations, un manneatico del cual soy fan, lo hizo famoso al decir que era uno de los 11 lugares que tenias que conocer antes de morir; así es  como millones de hambrientos se forman durante 2 horas mas o menos para poder probarlos. Esto pasa todos los días de 10:30 am a 4:00 pm.  Una vez adentro llegas con un hambre que pides 7 hot dogs y 3 ordenes de papas, bueno eso pedí yo.  Probé la especialidad  que era un hot dog con salchicha de pato y foie gras… UFFFF lo mas rico del mundo, valieron la pena las 2 horas de fila que me aventé.  También probé el Keira Knightley (mighty hot), el Paul Kelly (marinado en cerveza) y hay un Salma Hayek que  es extra hot pero ese no lo probé, me dio cosita.  También pedí papas a la francesa con queso y papas en grasa de pato. UNA DELICIA DE LUGAR. ya que entres y pidas la orden aprovecha para saludar a Doug que es el que te atiende en la caja.

Definitely the best place to eat a hot dog, not any hot dog but a gourmet hot Doug.  Be sure to be very hungry and take your chair because you’re gonna wait like 2 hours, all because Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations, a manneatic i love, made it famous by saying it’s one of the 11 places you should eat before you die, so millions of hungry people stay there waiting hours from 10;30 am to 4:00 pm.  Once inside you can eat all you want, as for me i tried the specialty; a duck sausage with foie gras, my all time favorite, the Keira Knightley (mighty hot), the Paul Kelly (cooked in beer) and there’s a Salma Hayek (extra hot).  There’s also fries in duck fat and french fries with cheese.  Really loved that place, also when you are at the cashier say hello to Doug that is the one getting the hot Doug’s orders.

KUMA’S CORNER

Literal y así como lo define el dueno, is the best heavy metal burger and bar in Chicago, y si, yo que estoy medio peleada con la carne la verdad ya que la vi se me antojo y estaba buenísima,  de las mejores hamburguesas que he comido.  Aparte el lugar esta increíble con una barra donde tienen cerveza de barril de todo tipo y bourbon para que acompañes tu hamburguesa gigante. Ordene la Mastodon y en la cruda a la media noche me comí la mitad de una Metallica que dejo el cámara en el coche.  Eso si, no esperes platicar mucho ya que hay puro heavy metal en el bar y no escuchas mucho al de al lado, pero who cares!!

The best heavy metal burger and bar in Chicago, that’s how the owner names this place, and it is! I don’t usually eat meat but i did my best and it was the best hamburger i had in years. The place is awesome, there’s a bar with a lot of draft beer to choose from and bourbon. I ordered the Mastodon and at midnight i ate a Metallica’s half that the camera guy left on the car.  Best hamburger ever!

Un restaurante bar con toques orientales y tiene la peculiaridad que cada día de la semana la música es temática. Hay banda de jazz en vivo y bandas de música experimental. No comí nada solo bebí, pero definitivamente díganle al barman que les prepare el trago que el quiera.

An oriental food and bar place that has the peculiarity of having different music every day of the week. There’s a live jazz band and experimental music bands.  I didn’t ate anything i just drank and drank, but you should tell the barman to get you the drink he wants, it;s gonna be good for sure.

DANNY’S TAVERN

Este el el bar típico del neighborhood, me encanto, siempre hay un dj en las tornas y ese día estaba Ben, buen amigo de los Vice poniendo música muy buena para bailar. cerveza, mucho vodka, buena vibra, muy buen lugar para llegar sin expectativas y pasar un buen rato.

This is the typical neighborhood bar, lovely place with DJs playing great music. That day Ben, a Vice friend was the DJ and the music was great!  Tons of beer, vodka, good vibe.  A place to arrive without expectations and have a great time.

NIGHT LIFE.

Fuimos a ver el concierto de The Raveonettes, muy buena banda, y les abrieron los Living Things, que el vocal estaba padre y traía un look jaggersesco junior. El lugar me recordó al Pasaguero un poco porque es como una bodega underground, nada mas que este si se escucha chingon y tiene una mesa de billar en la entrada. El lugar de moda para ir a ver bandas.

We went  to The Raveonettes concert with the Living Things as the opening band. The place reminded me like El Pasaguero, a Mexican place, because it looks like an underground warehouse, with the difference that Empty Bottle had a great sound and a pool  table by the entrance. The place you should go to listen to new bands.

HARD ROCK LIVE

Fuimos a un after party de Lollapalooza y que gran sorpresa ver que tocaba Chairlift y A Track y un dj set de dos chavas donde una se orgasmeaba tocando el violín… El lugar esta padre, fue en un salón en el Hard Rock y era muy vip.  Supongo que hay muchísimos conciertos todo el año.  Recomiendo escuchen a Chairlift.

We went there for a Lollapalooza after party and the bands that played were Chairlift, A Track and a 2 girls Dj set with one of them playing the violin. The place is cool and i guess the Hard Rock has many gigs all year long. My recommendation: listen to Chairlift!

RECKLESS RECORDS

El mejor lugar para ir a comprar viniles usados y nuevos, discos y películas en la onda hipster y de arte. Lo mas cagado es que el que maneja el lugar es Chris Conelly de los Revolting Cocks y nos tomamos fotos en un photo boot después de la entrevista.  Me contó que el vinil mas caro es el de  Beck y cuesta 265 dls porque es doble… Yo me compre uno increíble de una banda super ochenterisisisma llamada Full Force por 1.99 dls y uno de Marc Bolan por 7.  The Place to go for music!

The best place to buy used or new vinyls, buy cds and hipster movies. The best thing is that the owner is Chris Conelly of Revolting Cocks, we get to take our picture in the photo boot of the store after the interview. He told me the most expensive vinyl of all was Beck’s $265 usd because it’s a double set… i bought one from a super 80’s band called Full Force for just $1.99 usd and a Marc Bolan’s for $7 usd. The place to go for music!

NORTH MILWAUKEE

Son como 6 cuadras de tiendas vintage, de diseñador, cafés, bares hipsters y tiendas de ondita. Lo padre es que no es la típica cuadra de Michigan Ave donde están todas las tiendas de marca, esta zona es un poco mas pinchurrienta pero con mas onda y puedes encontrar desde Reckless Records, Urban, Rodan, una tienda con mas de 200 pares de botas vintage, restaurantes con muy buena comida y libros.

Like 6 blocks  full of vintage  and trendy stores, bars and cafes. The great thing about it, it’s that is not the typical Michigan Ave where all the expensive stores are, this is a more local and hipster zone and you can find a Reckless Record store, Urban Outfitters, Rodan, a place with more than 200 hundred pairs of vintage boots, restaurants and book stores.

LOLLAPALOOZA 2009

Para los manneaticos de los festivales de música como yo, acá un poco de lo que pude ver este año en Chicago,  mis highlights fueron:  Yeah Yeah Yeahs con karen O que se reía porque se le olvidaban las letras,  Tool, Snoop Dogg, Passion Pit, que tocaron en la carpa de The Citi y estuvo atascado y todo mundo coreaba el disco Manners. Lou Reed por Sweet Jane y porque en los monitores de piso veía la letra como si fuera karaoke, es que ya esta grande.  Band of Horses, Gang Gang Dance, Silversun Pickups, Santigold y lo que mas me gusto que no había visto, Jane’s Addiction que cerraron el festival y que obviamente estaban en casa…. buenísimos Perry Farrel y Dave Navarro uff.

For festival manneatics as myself, here’s a brief of what i got to watch and listen this year in Chicago, my highlights were: YeahYeahYeahs with Karen O laughing at how she forgot all the lyrics, Tool, Snoop Dogg, Passion Pit, that played in The Citi and was so full of people singing their last cd, Manners.  Lou Reed for Sweet Jane and because he got the lyrics on the floor monitors in case he forgotten any.  Band of Horses, Gang Gang Dance, Silversun Pickups, Santigold and my favorite, Jane’s Addiction closing Lollapalooza… Perry Farrel and Dave Navarro, so handsome!!F
